Bitaxe and AxeOS: The Complete Guide to Open-Source Bitcoin Mining Hardware
What is Bitaxe?
Bitaxe is the world’s most active open-source ASIC miner project. Driven by the geek community, its goal is to make Bitcoin mining decentralized, transparent, and low-barrier.
Unlike traditional miners, every design file for Bitaxe is public on GitHub—from circuit schematics to PCB layouts. Anyone can manufacture, modify, or improve it.
Evolution of the Bitaxe Family:
| Model | ASIC Chip | Hashrate | Power | Highlight |
| Bitaxe Ultra | BM1366 | ~500 GH/s | ~15W | Mature 3rd-gen solution |
| Bitaxe Gamma | BM1370 | 1.2 TH/s | 18-20W | Single-chip efficiency king |
| Bitaxe Turbo Touch | Dual BM1370 | 2.15 TH/s | 43W | Touchscreen + Open UI |
Bitaxe uses ASIC chips found in mass-produced Bitmain models (like the S19XP or S21 Pro). This means home miners can access industrial-grade silicon, just scaled down from thousands of chips to just 1 or 2.
AxeOS: The Soul of Bitaxe
AxeOS is the open-source firmware running on the Bitaxe. It is the operating system of the device and the only interface you interact with.
Core Features Overview:
| Feature Module | Description |
| Web Dashboard | Manage via browser IP address; no app needed |
| Real-Time Monitoring | Hashrate, temp, power, Best Difficulty at a glance |
| Performance Tuning | Freely adjust frequency and voltage |
| Pool Configuration | Supports Stratum V1, compatible with major pools |
| OTA Updates | Upgrade firmware directly via web interface |
Two Design Philosophies of AxeOS:
- Fully Local: No cloud dependency. No data phoning home. Type the IP address; you’re inside your own miner.
- Universal Compatibility: The same firmware runs on all Bitaxe models, auto-detecting hardware.
First-Time Setup Guide
Step 1: Enter AP Mode
- Upon powering on, Bitaxe creates a WiFi hotspot named
Bitaxe. - Connect your phone to this hotspot and open a browser to
http://192.168.4.1.
Step 2: Configure Network & Pool
- Enter your home WiFi SSID and password.
- In the Mining settings, enter the pool URL and your wallet address.
Step 3: Save & Reboot
- The device will connect to your home network and obtain an IP address.
- From then on, just visit that IP address to manage the miner.
🔑 Pro Tip: Set a DHCP reservation (static IP) for your Bitaxe in your router settings. This prevents the headache of losing the device IP after a power cycle.
